Delta Driver of the Year competitions

The Delta Driver of the Year Competition was inaugurated in October 1990 and ran successfully for over 30 years. It was open to permanent Delta Beverages employees who drove heavy motor vehicles as part of their profession, as well as forklift truck operators. The competition was held nationwide and became a flagship annual event that celebrated excellence, professionalism and safety among drivers.

Following its success, the competition was expanded to include light motor vehicle drivers in 1998 and forklift operators in 2003. However, due to prevailing business conditions between 2005 and 2009, the event was temporarily suspended before being reinstated in 2010. The Covid-19 pandemic also affected operations and resulted in disruptions during the 2020 and 2021 periods. Over the years, the Delta Driver of the Year Competition played a significant role in promoting safe driving practices, recognising outstanding performance and reinforcing a culture of operational excellence across the organisation.

Competition objectives

  • To motivate drivers to continuously improve their knowledge, skills, habits and attitudes.

  • To develop high standards of driving, extend vehicle life, optimise fuel efficiencies and protect the environment.

  • To cultivate a sense of pride and boost morale among all those who drive company vehicles.

  • To grow a branded Delta driver with a greater sense of consciousness in road traffic safety.

  • To show the rest of the corporate world the importance of driving skills improvement by leading from the front.

Conditions of entry

  • Only permanent Delta employees who are currently employed by Operating Business Units are eligible to compete.

  • Has the driver been involved in any accident in the last twelve months?

  • Has the driver been convicted of a driving offence during the same period stated above?

  • Has the driver been charged for misusing company vehicles?

  • Has the driver missed any scheduled driver training courses through his own fault?

  • Valid DDC certificate

  • Valid Retest certificate

  • Valid Medical certificate

  • Valid Driver Refresher Training Certificate

  • No theft or pending theft case(s)

  • No Track IT violations.

  • Good customer care record (Recommendation from S&D)

  • Clean driver's license (no endorsement)

  • Business units/Divisions are free to include any other criteria they consider pertinent.
